After relocating from Winston-Salem in 1996, Dr. Murphy considers Salisbury his adopted home. Originally from Ohio, Dr. Murphy graduated from The Ohio State University. Post-graduation, he completed a one-year hospital surgical residency at The Medical College of Ohio. Dr. Murphy relocated to North Carolina and joined the practice of Winston-Salem Dental Care where he practiced until 1996. Since graduating from dental school his quest for educational advancement has continued. Some of his achievements include a Fellowship and Mastership from the Academy of General Dentistry, an Associate Fellowship from the American Academy of Implant Dentistry and he is also an alumnus of The Pankey Institute. It is Dr. Murphy's drive to advance in the dental profession that enables him to further his pledge to offer patients the best possible care for a lifetime of health.

A general dentist is the primary care provider for patients of all ages and is responsible for the diagnosis, treatment, management, and overall coordination of services related to a patient's oral health needs. The Academy of General Dentistry (AGD) is a professional association of general dentists dedicated to providing quality dental care and oral health education to the public. AGD members stay up-to-date in their profession through a lifelong commitment to continuing education. Obtaining a Fellowship is achieved by candidates completing 500 hours of approved continuing education and passing the rigorous Fellowship exam.
The award of Mastership is one of the few post-graduate designations available to general dentists. In addition to the Fellowship requirements, it requires dental practitioners to complete over 1,100 hours of continuing education in specific disciplines including a minimum of 400 hours of participation courses.
There are only 2,216 active Masters throughout the United States and Canada, and Dr. Murphy is the only Master in our area.
